Spring Plumbing Tune-Up

Catch small issues before they turn into big issues

Spring is here—and while you’re clearing out closets and prepping your garden, don’t forget to check in on one of your home’s most vital systems: your plumbing. After a long winter of heavy use and potential freeze exposure, your pipes, fixtures, and appliances could use a little TLC.

Use this Spring Plumbing Maintenance Checklist to catch small issues before they turn into big (and expensive) ones.

1. Inspect Exposed Pipes for Leaks

Check under sinks, in basements, and around outdoor spigots. Look for moisture, rust, or white calcium deposits—these could signal a slow leak or corrosion.

2. Test All Shut-Off Valves

Spring is a good time to test your home’s water shut-off valves, especially the main one. If they’re hard to turn or completely stuck, have them serviced or replaced.

3. Check for Toilet Leaks

Add a few drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. Wait 10 minutes—if the color appears in the bowl, you have a leak that could be wasting dozens of gallons of water a day.

4. Clean and Test Sump Pumps

If you have a sump pump, it’s crucial to check its operation before the spring rains arrive. Pour a bucket of water into the pit—if the pump doesn’t kick on immediately, it needs service.

5. Inspect Outdoor Faucets and Hoses

Freezing temperatures can crack spigots and pipes. Turn on each outdoor faucet and listen for leaks inside the wall or visible drips outside.

6. Flush Your Water Heater

Sediment buildup reduces efficiency and shortens the life of your tank. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, schedule a professional flush.

7. Look for Slow Drains

If water pools around your feet in the shower or sinks take too long to empty, it may be time to snake the drain or clear deeper clogs.

8. Check Water Pressure

Weak water pressure can signal anything from a clogged aerator to a hidden leak or pipe corrosion. If multiple fixtures have low flow, get it checked out.

9. Inspect Your Water Treatment System

Spring is a good time to change filters, test your water quality, and make sure your softener or filtration system is working properly.
